How Does an All-on-4 Dental Implant Procedure Work?

Updated: Jul 29, 2022

All-on-4 is a registered trademark of Nobel Biocare—it is a dental implant technique which uses fewer implants than traditional implant methods. When considering options for dental implants, the All-on-4 procedure can be a smart choice for patients looking for a more natural and permanent alternative to dentures. Dr. Nicolas Bebeau specializes in this revolutionary tooth-replacement option.

What is an All-on-4 procedure, and how is it different from other implants?

The All-on-4 (AO4) procedure is named for its number of implants, as this procedure can be performed with as few as four implants per jaw. Using traditional methods, a mouth full of implants would require 8-10 implants per jaw resulting in a much greater expense. But with the All-on-4 treatment solution, only four implants is required.

Revolutionary dental implant technology allows the rear implants to be angled at a 30-45 degree inclination, reducing the need for bone grafting. These angled implants allow patients who have suffered bone loss to be eligible for the All-on-4 procedure, avoiding the long and costly process of bone grafting.

Shorter Surgical Procedures and Recovery Time

In this procedure, the implants are placed and teeth fabricated in one day. Because of this trait, the procedure has earned itself a few nicknames, including: “same day teeth,” “teeth in a day,” and “smile in a day.” The faster recovery process is a much more desirable alternative to traditional implant procedures, where the process can take upwards of six or more months to complete, with extensive recovery time between each step of the procedure.

How does the All-on-4 procedure work?

To understand how the AO4 procedure works, it can be helpful to look at the procedure in comparison with traditional implants. With traditional implants, each individual tooth has one small titanium screw which is surgically inserted into the gums. Then, your dentist will place a single false tooth to each screw.

All-on-4 implants function differently, as each tooth is not individually replaced. Instead, your oral surgeon will insert four titanium implants into your jawbone as the main anchors. From there, they can then attach a permanent bridge to each of those titanium implants, achieving a seamless look throughout the mouth. These implants will stay in place permanently, and with proper care and cleaning, will look just as natural as your real teeth.

Considering an All-on-4 procedure? The All-on-4 procedure is a great choice for anyone who is looking for:

  • An option to replace an entire set of teeth in one day and a single surgery

  • A more permanent solution than dentures

  • A quicker, more cost-effective alternative to traditional dental implants

  • A faster recovery time than traditional dental implants

  • A more natural-looking alternative to dentures
