What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are one of the most popular and natural-looking ways to replace missing teeth. Dental implants have been used in dentistry for several decades. And as dental implant technology has advanced considerably in recent years, they have become dentist’s number one choice for tooth replacement.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth made of three pieces: implant, abutment and crown. The implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone by an oral surgeon and are considered very safe.  Success rates are on average greater than 95% with most patients experiencing minimal or zero complications.

Dental implants allow you to eat, drink and speak normally, all while having the appearance of real teeth. Dental implants can also reduce pain and bite issues that may arise from teeth shifting into spaces where lost teeth once were.  Dental implants are a great long-term replacement for missing teeth. They provide support for the jawbone, and do not wear out over time from daily use. Dental implants can help prevent bone loss from missing teeth, and provide enhanced facial aesthetics.

What Happens During a Dental Implant Procedure?

The dental implant itself is a small titanium screw that is placed into the jawbone to act as your new tooth root. The middle part of the implant system, the abutment, connects the titanium implant to a crown. The crown is the only portion of the implant that you will see.

In order to place the implant successfully, you need to have sufficient bone to hold the screw. If the bone surrounding a damaged tooth has deteriorated from infection or trauma, you may need a bone graft either prior to or during implant replacement.

Dr. Bebeau will ensure that you have enough bone to support the implant, place the implant in the appropriate position, and check to see if the implant has fully healed. Next, a dentist will complete the implant process by fabricating the abutment and the crown.

What Is the Home Care Procedure for Dental Implants?

The home care procedure for dental implants is very simple and extremely similar to the home care procedure for natural teeth! Brush your teeth at least twice daily, focusing extra attention on brushing the gum line around your implants. Floss daily and use an alcohol-free oral rinse to prevent cavities and infections.
